About Troia Golf Course, Lisbon

Troia Golf is genuinely one of Portugal’s hidden gems and is probably the most underrated course in the country. Geographically it’s about 20 minutes south of Lisbon but it takes a little longer to get there as you have to use the Setubal Ferry to get to the Troia peninsula and the course is just five minutes away from the ferry station. Its location is spectacular as the peninsula it is on lies between the Atlantic ocean, the Sado Estary and the Sierra da Arrabida.

Once you have got there then you will certainly not be disappointed as this Robert Trent Jones Senior design is brilliant. He has used all the natural features of the landscape to their best advantage and then added several of the design features he is noted for. There are several dog legs that sweep between the pine trees and there is no shortage of bunkers and the majority of the greens are raised and very tricky.

From the back tees the course is nearly 7000 yards long and presents a tough par 72. When the Portuguese Open was held here only one player beat par after four rounds. So a tough course but don’t let that put you off as there are several different tees to play from so that players of all abilities can enjoy the spectacular views and some of the best golf holes in Portugal. Trent Jones Senior is quoted as saying that this is one of his very best designs and has included three of the holes in his list of the best eighteen he has created.

Its easy to see why the par 4 third hole makes that list as it has magnificent sea views as well as being a challenge to make par.

Considering that Troia is ranked in the Top 50 courses in Continental Europe by Golf World it must be one of the most unknown courses to the majority of UK golfers.
