Where to book golf breaks in Tenerife
Across the island, you’ll be able to find a number of courses and resorts that suit all budgets. Most holidaymakers settle themselves towards the south of the island in proximity to Costa Adeje and Playa De Las Americas, two destinations which have been Tenerife golf hot spots since the 1970s.
You’ll find plenty of fantastic accommodation here, to suit a variety of budgets. There are 5-star Michelin-starred restaurants on offer, mouth-watering cheap eats, and a number of places to try the best local cuisine. And all of this is within a short drive from four of the best golf courses in Tenerife.
A little further north is the Buenavista del Norte resort, a much quieter stay offering a real authentic Canary Islands experience. The area has a rugged coastline and a fabulous course to play, designed by five-time major winner Seve Ballesteros.
Best golf courses in Tenerife
The Buenavista golf course is a truly unique course in Tenerife and is located within a 75-minute drive from Costa Adeje and Playa De Las Americas. Even if that’s not where you’re spending your Tenerife golf break, it’s well worth the trip to the magnificent course. The picturesque coastal course offers a great challenge for the competitive golfers, especially with its complex back 9 that is sure to keep you on your toes. The gorgeous backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean and the impressive mountains will also add extra drama and beauty to your round to give you the full Tenerife golfing experience.
The same can be said for the unique Tecina golf course at La Gomera. La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands, sitting just off Tenerife’s west coast. The epic mountain top fairways are well worth the short ferry trip across from Los Christianos. The course hosts some magnificent views of the surrounding Gomeran scenery with the striking presence of the Mount Teide Volcano in full view. Whether you’re down the middle of the fairway or hitting out of the rough, this course looks impressive from every angle.
Abama Golf, a little closer to the holiday hotspots, without compromising on the excellent 360 views from the course. Enjoy breath-taking views over the Atlantic Ocean with the course reaching a high point of 315 meters. The immaculately maintained 18 hole championship course contains over 300 species of subtropical plant life, and plays host to some challenging hazards including 22 lakes, white-sand bunkers and over 25,000 palm trees provide plenty of challenge for golfers of all abilities. A great course for groups on a golf holiday in Tenerife looking for their next golfing challenge.
Back in town, in the very heart of Playa De Las Americas is Golf Las Americas, ideal for those just wanting to stroll up from their hotel. It’s a course that features water heavily, so it’s well worth bringing a few extra balls ahead of playing this 18. Aside from its many water hazards, the course offers a variety of hole difficulty designed to challenge more experienced golfers but also provide some support for those with higher handicaps, giving you some very makeable par 5s. Aside from it’s super soft greens and lush fairways, the course offers excellent practice facilities to warm up before your round. These include, driving range, putting green and chipping practice. In addition to this, the course boasts a top of the range pro shop, events hall and TV lounge for you to explore before or after your game.
Amarilla Golf at the Golf Del Sur resort is a Championship standard course made famous when it hosted the Tenerife Open. The 5th at Amarilla is arguably the most unique hole you can experience as a golfer in Tenerife. It has no fairway. Instead, golfers tackling this challenge must hit their ball across an area of sea to ensure they reach the green. Aside from this ultimate golfing challenge, the course offers stunning coastal views of the Atlantic Ocean and high quality fairways and greens. In addition to its main 18 hole course, a 9 hole pitch and putt is also available for the beginner golfers or for those of you who just fancy a short game. Amarilla Golf Tenerife supplies both! Popular accommodation at the Golf Del Sur includes the Wyndham Residences, stylish apartments that are just a short walk away from the beach and marina.
Things to do in Tenerife
As well as being the largest, Tenerife is one of the most interesting and intriguing of the Canary Islands. Its attractions include Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site, a visit to which is like stepping onto a different planet. The park is home to the Pico Viejo volcano, which has contributed to an array of unique flora and fauna that are well worth exploring.
Out towards the coast, there are plenty of incredible beaches such as Playa De Las Americas Playa Del Duque. There are also some fantastic water sports to enjoy here and first class beachside bars to cool off in.
Siam Park is a novelty which needs to be enjoyed. It’s the island’s biggest theme park and the real thrill seekers will love the Tower of Powerslide, plummeting you down a near-vertical 90ft drop.
