About Praia D’El Rey Golf Course

Praia D’El Rey on Portugals Silver Coast has long been regarded as one of the best courses in Portugal and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it a great design it’s also scenically spectacular with outstanding views of the Atlantic, the Berlengas Islands and beyond.

The course was designed by Cabell Robinson who is responsible for designing some of the best courses in Europe and opened in 1997. He had a great piece of land to work with and his design weaves amongst extensive pine trees and undulating sand dunes. For a course that is so close to the sea, the fairways are surprisingly lush giving a unique experience of playing links golf but from a parkland style lie. From the back tees the course is around 6800 yards with a par of 72. Fortunately, there are several tees to play from so everyone can enjoy this wonderful course whatever your handicap.

The opening holes wind through the trees and go first uphill then downhill towards the sea. The second is a tough par 5 of around 500 yards with water on the right and bunkers and rough protecting the fairway and green. All the holes on the front nine are good but it’s the back nine that are truly spectacular and top class. The stretch that runs from the 13th to the 16th is visually stunning as well as challenging. It is very hard not to get distracted by the views of the Atlantic Ocean on your left-hand side but the well-guarded greens and narrow fairways will demand maximum concentration.

Praia D’El Rey is a must-play course for golfers of all abilities and as it is now close to the magnificent new course at Westcliffs, the Silver Coast is definitely one of  Europe’s top golfing destinations.
