Belas Golf, Lisbon
Belas Golf is located quite close to the City of Lisbon and is therefore ideal for those wanting a game either on the way from or to the airport. Its not only its geographical location that makes it worth a visit as it is a very good and much underrated golf course. It was not a particularly inspiring piece of land for a golf course designer to work with. However, the American Rocky Roquemore has done a great job and built a course that winds through the rolling hills and has taken into account the landscape and vegetation to provide a really good test of golf.
Play “Augusta” At Belas Golf
It opened in 1997 and from the championship tees it stretches to around 6800 yards and has a par of 72. Its reasonably hilly without being too steep and can be played without requiring a buggy. There are great views of the surrounding countryside form some of the elevated tees and it has been the venue for some of Portugal’s national professional events.
The lush fairways stand out against the sparse surrounding scrub land and there are several memorable holes where the rough well positioned bunkers and the occasional lake provide adequate protection for the course. The sixth hole is a good example where your drive has to avoid a fairway bunker on the left-hand side of the fairway and then you have to play your second shot over water to a sloping green. The final three holes provide a good and challenging finish with water on the right-hand side of the 16th fairway to catch the errant drive and water to the side and back of the short par 3 seventeenth. Water is again in evidence on the finishing par 4 eighteenth hole.
There is an onsite golf academy which means that the practice facilities are excellent. There are two short game areas and two putting greens and as the greens are invariably on the quick side some practice on them before the round might well be beneficial.
