Golf In Hampshire
There are currently 66 golf clubs in Hampshire and 8 more on the Isle of Wight. The first course opened there in 1865 with the opening of Bramshaw Golf Club in the garden of a local landowner. The county stretches from the seaside area around Portsmouth and Southampton further North towards the area south west of London. The topography means that you can find many different styles of golf courses from Links to heathland spread throughout the County.
The Golf Courses In Hampshire
There are many very good golf courses throughout the County but to be fair there is no standout Championship venue however many of the courses would be ranked in the top 100 in the UK and are well worth a visit.
Starting from the South Hayling Golf Club offers spectacular views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Its around 6500 yards from the back tees and was redesigned to eliminate the many blind shots that were on the original design. Its now a classic links design with fast fairways and undulating challenging greens. The eleventh hole is a little gem whichever tee you play from. The green is slightly elevated and surrounded by pot bunkers and has the Solent as a picturesque backdrop.
Liphook is a classic heathland design that although its less than 6500 yards is a real challenge to play to your handicap. The traditional design makes the most of the heather and pine and birch trees that makes strategic play a necessity rather than sheer power and it sits easily in any list of the top one hundred courses.
The adjoining county of Berkshire has some of England’s finest golf courses built mainly on the underlying sand belt which provides a perfect environment for golf course architects. Blackmoor Golf Club sits on the same stretch of land and definitely deserves to be better known. Even at just over 6100 yards its still used as a qualifying course for the Open Championship which emphasises its quality and toughness.
There are 27 holes at the Meon Valley Golf & Country Club a parkland design set in 225 acres of countryside. It’s a longish course from the back tees but straightness off the tee is paramount to get a good score. The fairways wind through an oak forest and the greens are protected by astute bunkering.
