Considered to be one of Ireland’s top link courses, Rosses Point Golf Course has matured beautifully over the years and has embedded itself seamlessly within the natural scenery surrounding it. Created by the famous course designer Harry Colt, this course has played host to the majority of Ireland’s championships over the course of it’s esteemed history. Three large beaches under the cliffs protect from the Atlantic Ocean whilst Benbulben Mountain wrestles with the sea for which is the most visually stunning on the land side.
Widely believed to be the first golf course in Ireland to offer 18 holes, Rosses Point Golf Course, has a number of absolutely beautiful holes to play. The front nine provides a great hole in the short Par 4 on the second hole which measures just 278 metres and requires clever club selection and strategy as you play uphill. However, the tricky play is worth it as the view from the green is absolutely stunning.
Additional things to consider when playing this course is the sea breeze which continually tests your accuracy and club selection however the 3rd and 5th holes provide relief with some superb downhill drives. Moving on to the 7th, you will be forgiven for thinking this is straightforward forward but be aware of the brook water hazard protecting the green.
The back nine at Rosses Point Golf Course carry on the visually beautiful views with the 10th and 11th holes which have the Benbulben Mountain looming in the distance. The Par 4 14th stretches 394 metres from the championship tees and is Tom Watson’s favourite hole. This is incredibly tough and when the wind is factored in, it almost becomes like a Par 5! The club needed on the 15th needs to carry a fair distance over some very wild dunes close to the water’s edge, while the best of the last few holes is arguably the Par four 17th, which is rated as the second most difficult hole of the course and requires a terrific second shot to make the green.
