Golf Holidays To Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria Golf Holidays
The beauty of a golfing holiday on a small island is that most courses will be well within driving distance. This makes Gran Canaria the ideal golf break. Its volcanic landscape make for challenging courses, while the sunshine throughout both summer and winter make it a literal hot spot all year round.
The island, which lies just 90 miles off the Africa coast, is the second most populous of the Canary Islands after Tenerife, and like its neighbour has plenty to offer.
Where to Spend a Golf Break in Gran Canaria
There are two main destinations that tourists flock to on a Gran Canaria golf holiday, those being Playa Del Ingles and Maspalomas. Both are within minutes of each other and a short drive from a number of courses in the south of the island.
The two areas offer a great mix of hotels, from budget to luxury, and provide great resting spots for groups of all sizes.
To the north of the island you’ll find Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria which is not only full of culture, great food, and fabulous beaches, it’s also home to the oldest golf club in Spain.
Gran Canaria Golf Courses
Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas opened its clubhouse doors in 1891 and has been one of the must-plays in Gran Canaria ever since. It’s one of two courses at the northern end of the island alongside El Cortijo Golf Club, and has incredible views of the mountains and volcanic landscape which the island is rightly famed for.
It’s in the south where you’ll find the majority of courses however, although Playa del Ingles is only a 45-minute drive from the centre of Las Palmas. The Anfi Tauro Golf Course is considered a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to playing golf in Gran Canaria; located a little further west of Maspalomas, the course blends natural preservation and created beauty perfectly giving you plenty of challenge with lakes, waterfalls, and lush vegetation lining the course.
You’ll find plenty of other courses in the south from the 36 holes of Salobre Golf to the Lopesan Meloneras course which has three holes along the rugged Canarian coast.
What Else To Do in Gran Canaria
No matter what your reason for visiting Gran Canaria, you can never escape the volcanic landscape; and it’s well worth discovering. Roque Nublo is at the very heart of the island and is a protected natural monument and has stunning views across the island. It’s a two-mile hike from nearby Tejeda, and is also nearby Pico de las Nieves, the highest peak in Gran Canaria.
If exploring the towns is more suited to you, there’s plenty going on in Maspalomas. Obviously, first and foremost there are the glorious sandy beaches, but also a number of fantastic bars, restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife.
