Golf Barriere Deauville

Opened in 1929 the Golf Barriere Deauville course alongside the Hotel Barriere L’Hotel du Golf Deauville consists of 3 loops of 9 holes. The original 18 holes were designed by Tom Simpson and in the 1960’s Henry Cotton designed a further 9 holes and the course is now rightly regarded as one of the most beautiful in France. It is set on top of the Mon-Canisy Hill and offers great views over Deauville, Trouville and the surrounding countryside. It has been the host of several professional events including the French Open. The course is about 45Kms from Le Havre and 85Kms from Rouen but is easily reached by motorway.

The course runs through woodland and is one of the top parkland courses in Northern France. It is not the longest course but it does demand accuracy from the tee. The fairways are reasonably wide but the fact that you are playing many holes through tree-lined fairways seems to make them look narrower than they are. Several doglegs require the correct placement of the tee shot to get the best approach to the well-guarded greens that are often surrounded by bunkers. With 27 holes available you can play a combination of each of the nine hole loops but the most regularly used are the red and white courses. This combination gives you a par 71 at a little over 6000 yards. That would include 5 picturesque par threes and 3 par fives. The terrain is a little hilly but not excessively so and you will find yourself challenged with lots of different types of lie on the undulating fairways.

The clubhouse has recently been renovated and is situated on the ground floor of the hotel and offers a fine selection of food and drink. It would be a shame not to try at least one of the local varieties of Calvados that is on offer before you leave.

There are excellent practice facilities that you would expect from a championship course and they include driving range practice bunkers and a putting green. Buggies and clubs are available for hire.
