Yorkshire Golf
As Yorkshire is the largest county in England it is not surprising that it contains some of the finest golf courses in the country. The designer of Augusta National and Cypress Point, two of the worlds great golf courses, learnt his craft here and there are several courses that Alistar Mackenzie designed before he set off for America and worldwide fame that are also located in the County.
You can experience courses of all descriptions from parkland through heath-land and links courses – there is something for everyone whatever your preference. In addition to wonderful golf there are cities and towns to visit that are full of historical interest and offer great nights out. For those who enjoy good food then Leeds and York are rapidly rivalling London in the number of outstanding restaurants they have and have excellent shops.
Golf Courses In Yorkshire
One of the best ways to experience the number of outstanding courses is to base yourself in one of the major cities in the area. Both York and Leeds have hotels that range from five star to more economical places and there are numerous golf courses within easy travelling distance. York is a great centre with numerous historical attractions to visit and great bars and restaurants for evening entertainment.
Fulford Golf Club would be the best-known course near the City as it was home to the Benson & Hedges tournament for many years. With 4 other good courses a very good package can be made up and for those who want to travel further afield the courses in Leeds are only half an hour away and Ganton Golf Club is about 40 minutes drive. Leeds also has many attractions and some of England’s finest courses.
Moortown hosted the Ryder Cup in 1929 and has been the venue for numerous professional tournaments and is a great experience. Personal preference would be for Alwoodley which is a Mckenzie classic design as is Sand Moor Golf Club. The 27 holes at Moor Allerton are typical of a Trent Jones designed course and there are several other courses that are worth looking at.
Heading further East is Ganton Golf Club which has also hosted the Ryder Cup as well as the Walker Cup and is one of England’s finest inland golf courses. It’s a fantastic course and should be on any golfer visiting Yorkshire wish list. At the South of the County is another Ryder Cup venue Lindrick which hosted the event in 1957 and it is consistently ranked in the UK’s top 100 courses.
