About Guadalhorce Golf Club, Benalmadena
Guadalhorce Golf Club is built on an old estate that dates back to the sixteenth century. The country house was converted into a mansion very much English in design in the nineteenth century and the resort completed its transformation in 1987 when a group got together to build a golf course there. A Finnish architect originally designed the course and it was updated by Miguel Angel Jimenez in 2009. As he is a member of the Club and regularly plays and practices there, you can be sure he did a good job. As it sits on old agricultural land one of the features of the course is the lack of housing around it.
The course is now a par 72 extending to 6600 yards from the back tees and really has two quite different nine holes. The front nine is very much like an English parkland course relatively flat and easy to walk and the courses main protection are the large greens that can present problems as they are usually quite quick. If you can avoid the out of bounds that occurs on a few holes you could be thinking the course is easy. On the second nine there are more possibilities for getting into trouble as water comes into play on 5 of the holes and the greens have more subtle borrows to catch the unwary. The par three 17th hole where you have to hit to a green that is almost surrounded by water or large bunkers will long be remembered by those achieving a par. There are trees and shrubs of many different kinds to add to the golfing experience.
As the course is situated quite close to Malaga its an ideal destination to play either on the way to or from the airport. The original country house has been converted into an elegant clubhouse and the terrace overlooking the eighteenth green is a great place for an after round cervezza!
