About Desert Springs Golf Course, Almeria
Desert Springs Golf Club is a little bit of Arizona in Spain as it is Europe’s only true desert-style golf course. Course Architect Peter Mcevoy has designed a course that offers something to players of all abilities. The fairways are generous enabling most golfers to get away from the tee reasonably easily. From there, however, he has used all the local natural features to present a challenge to test the form of all the players. The holes are framed by cacti, dry river beds and rocks and it’s a testament to the designer’s skill that he has managed to make any sort of golf course never mind a very good one from such unpromising terrain. The bright green fairways make a striking contrast to the surrounding areas.
Off the back tees the course is 6500 yards long with a par of 72 and it opened in 2001. Since then it has hosted numerous events and in 2017 was a venue for the European Tour qualifying school. The excellent practice facilities and all year round excellent climate make it a popular place for winter training for many professionals and national teams.
The greens are large and undulating and are always in top condition as they were constructed to USGA specifications.
On site there are a variety of accommodation options available, offering the very best in facilities and comfort. There are three and four-bedroom villas all with a private swimming pool and their roof terraces are the perfect place to have a relaxing drink and take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. There are also apartments and townhouses as well as some cottages that look like traditional workers’ homes from the outside but are fully modernised inside. There are numerous sports facilities available on site as well as restaurants and bars.
