As yet not as well known as the Costa del Sol for golf, the golf courses Costa Blanca offers are rapidly increasing in popularity with UK golfers and is easy to see why when you consider the quality of golf on offer. Costa Blanca is a large region offering many contrasts and has evening entertainment to suit all tastes. From the bustling night life that Benidorm has to offer to the quieter areas further south there is something for everyone here at prices to suit all pockets. Here’s 5 of our favourite Costa Blanca golf courses for you to consider!
Las Colinas Golf & Country Club
Often used as a qualifying course for the European Tour School, Las Colinas is a seriously good golf course but still playable whatever your standard of golf due to the number of teeing grounds on offer. As an example the par 5 eleventh ranges from 649 yards from the competition tee to a more manageable 550 yards from the forward tee. This is another excellent Cabell B. Robinson design set amidst lemon and orange groves working its way through valleys that make the most of the stunning views.
This Costa Blanca golf course has several dog legs with wide fairways and there are 6 lakes to negotiate which come more into play towards the end of the round. The par 3’s are a delight and just because you have hit them doesn’t mean that your challenge is over as the greens are among the quickest in the Region.
Villaitana Levante
Overlooking Benidorm, the Levante course is a Jack Nicklaus design with several teeing areas to suit golfers of all abilities. From the back tees it’s a good challenge with strategically placed bunkers waiting for the wayward tee shot. The variety of tee positions means that you can make the course as challenging or as easy as you want but having found the fairway you are faced with a familiar Jack Nicklaus problem. Most of the greens are elevated with great bunkering demanding a carefully placed approach shot. The course is very much one of the American style golf courses in Costa Blanca as its design includes lots of bunkers – We would always take a buggy here as there are a few long walks from green to tee.
La Finca Golf
Set alongside a modern 5 star hotel La Finca, golf is a recent addition to golf in the Costa Blanca having opened in 2002. It has now matured into a very playable resort type golf course that can be as challenging as you want again depending on what tees you play off. There is a great par 4 with water all the way to the green if you want to take it on or you can play across the lake and have a relatively easy shot to the green. A real risk and reward hole. There is also an island green to negotiate early in the round to make sure you are awake and ready to go. Off the back tees its 6500 yards so for a resort course its no pushover but is well worth a visit.
Bonalba Golf
A really interesting design set about 20 minutes from Alicante and well worth a visit. The front nine is quite tight requiring accuracy from both the tee and for your approach into well guarded greens. Holes 6 to 9 are real card wreckers and are locally known as Amen Corner get through those and the course opens up and definitely becomes easier. There are 5 large lakes that come into play on several holes as well as numerous bunkers to avoid. A deceptively difficult course that isn’t very long but requires accurate play and is full of interest.
Alicante Golf
A Seve Ballesteros design that unusually for one of his courses is very playable for players of all abilities. It opened in 1998 and has 6 par 3’s 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. Its relatively flat and so is easily walk-able but is very fair as there are no hidden surprises as you can clearly see everything facing you. There is an excellent 4 star hotel on site and buggies are always included in the green fee. There are not many courses where you have to play over a Roman ruin but that’s exactly what faces you on the 14th hole. The speed of the greens provide extremely good protection for the course and how the course record holder got it round here in 62 is beyond us!
