El Paraiso Golf, Puerto Banus

El Paraiso Golf is one of the oldest established courses in the Costa Del Sol region having opened in 1973 and is one of the legendary Gary Players best designs. It is a beautiful setting in the El Paraiso valley with the sea behind it and the La Concha mountain to the North.

It has been called a ‘mini Augusta’ with its lush green fairways and streams that come into play on several holes and the colourful exotic fauna that is visible throughout the round. The course is easily walkable as it’s relatively flat and is suitable for golfers of all abilities. The course and clubhouse have undergone a continual process of improvements and it’s no wonder that it is an extremely popular member-owned golf club. There are several different tees to play from so you can enjoy the course whatever your ability and despite the exotic vegetation it’s very reminiscent of an English parkland course. From the back tees it’s around 6700 yards with a par of 71.

The sixth hole is probably the most memorable. It is a dog leg par 5 and from the tee, you have to avoid two well-positioned bunkers. Having negotiated them you then have to keep the ball up the left-hand side to avoid the lake that catches the shot that flies to the right-hand side.

Overall this is a good holiday/resort-style golf course that is interesting and challenging, but you don’t have to hit 300 yards to get round it. You won’t need a buggy as apart from one or two holes there is very little elevation to encounter. The greens are also quite a decent size and are generally fast enough to present a challenge. With reasonably wide fairways and little rough you have every chance of having a very enjoyable round of golf.
