Dom Pedro Golf Victoria Course, Vilamoura

The Dom Pedro Golf Victoria course is one of the few in mainland Europe that the legendary Arnold Palmer designed and at its inception was one of the most ambitious golf projects carried out in Portugal. Situated next door to the popular resort of Vilamoura it has since become one of the must-visit courses in the Algarve.

It’s over 7000 yards from the championship tees with a par of 72 and has hosted many professional tournaments. It has been the home of the Portugal Masters event for the last 4 years and will again be held there in 2018. When you play the course, you will be amazed and very impressed as to how low a score the professionals can shoot as there were several scores in the low sixties last year that defy belief. Fortunately, there are five different teeing grounds on most holes so that golfers of all abilities can enjoy their round.

The landscape is natural wetlands so there is water coming into play on several of the holes as well as olive, almond and carob trees providing additional hazards. The fairways are pretty generous and although they are undulating they are reasonably wide and the course is relatively flat. Some clever use of earth-moving equipment has sculpted mounds around the fairways giving the course a more natural feel.

The seventh is one of the standout holes and is ranked the hardest on the course. You need to carry the ball over a lake from the tee to a fairway that doglegs left. Bunkers on the right-hand side of the green then make the second shot just as challenging as the drive.

The course is usually in great condition despite its popularity and the very large greens make two-putting for a par by no means a certainty. It would be beneficial to have some putting practice before you go out to play and there is no excuse as at over 2500 square metres its one of the largest putting greens you will find.
