Inspection Trip To Catalunya

An early start on the 6.25am flight from Manchester to Barcelona with Ryanair was the staring point for four days looking at Catalunya as a golfing destination. The flight arrived on time and once we had worked out that the golf clubs came on a different carousel to the normal one we were on our way.

We headed north to our first stop, the Hotel Barcelona Golf Resort & Spa, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires which was about thirty minutes out of Barcelona. It is a bright modern superior four star property set alongside the Club de Golf Barcelona. The reception staff were welcoming and the allocated room was spacious and comfortable. Despite the size of the large bed there was still plenty of room for luggage and golf clubs and the spacious bathroom area was what you would expect from a four star property. On the ground floor there was a restaurant and bar with a good selection of drinks on offer. On the lower ground floor there was a modern spa and gym. I didn’t have time to avail myself of the various treatments on offer but the excellent pool area looked tempting.

It was an easy decision to forgo working out in the gym to go and try the golf course. First stop was at the large practice area where there was plenty of room to get the kinks out of the swing that occurs on a long days travelling. Designed by José María Olazábal, it’s a very interesting layout with several stand out holes. The course covers an extensive area and each hole seems self contained as they are surrounded by trees and wind their way around the undulating terrain. If you have one of the Solo buggies, which are like souped up mobility scooters, then some of the descents can be quite exciting! The stretch of holes from 7 to 9 are particularly good and provide an Excellent finish to the front nine. The greens were of a very high standard and I would imagine they could be made lightening fast in the summer months.

The only criticism could be the lack of grass on some of the fairways. This was due to the very low rainfall this autumn and with an overseeing programme already planned for next season they should be soon back to their best. in In addition to the Championship course there is a very good executive course which is well worth a visit. If you are looking for a good hotel with good golf then the Hotel Barcelona Golf Golf & Spa is well worth a look.
