When most people think of Lisbon, they picture historic yellow trams rattling up steep hills, lively evening sessions in Bairro Alto, and plates of warm pastel de natas. It has rightly earned its reputation as a world-class city break.
But beyond the cobblestones and museums, the wider Lisbon region also offers excellent golf and easy access to the Atlantic coast.
A Lisbon golf holiday provides an all-in-one destination where you can pair a morning on a championship golf course with an afternoon relaxing by the sea. If you are looking for a short trip that combines culture, nightlife, pristine fairways and golden sands, Lisbon is hard to beat.

Does Lisbon have a beach?
Lisbon itself does not have a beach in the historic city centre, so you won’t find a sandy shoreline beside Praça do Comércio. However, several of Portugal’s best-known beaches are within easy reach by train or car, making it simple to combine time in the city with a few hours on the coast.
The region is fringed by brilliant coastal stretches. Three local favourites stand out:
- Praia de Carcavelos: This is the largest and most famous beach on the Lisbon-Cascais coastline. It’s a wide, golden stretch renowned for its great surf, bustling beach bars, and vibrant, social atmosphere.
- Praia do Tamariz: Tucked away in the elegant town of Estoril, this beach offers a slightly more sophisticated vibe. It sits directly in front of the famous Casino Estoril and features a beautiful promenade lined with seaside cafés.
- Praia da Conceição: Situated right in the historic heart of Cascais, an area that is incredibly popular with the Glencor Golf team and our clients alike, this sheltered bay offers calm waters, soft sand and a charming resort feel.
How far is Lisbon from the beach?
Lisbon is close enough to the coast that reaching the beach is pretty straightforward. Here is a breakdown of the distances to the nearest beaches ibn Lisbon and the best ways to get there:
Praia de Carcavelos, approximately 12 miles from the centre
- By train: Jump on the Linha de Cascais train from Cais do Sodré station in central Lisbon. It takes about 20 minutes, costs just a few euros and drops you a short walk from the sand.
- By taxi or Uber: A journey can take around 25 minutes via the scenic N6 Marginal road, although the traffic can build up on hot summer weekends.
Praia do Tamariz and Praia da Conceição, approximately 15 to 17 miles from the centre
- By train: The same coastal train line from Cais do Sodré goes all the way to Estoril for Tamariz and terminates in Cascais for Conceição. It takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Estoril station is just across the road from Praia do Tamariz.
- By car or taxi: Driving takes about 30 minutes via the A5 motorway, depending on traffic.
- A quick tip on driving and parking: While hiring a car gives you total freedom, parking right next to the popular town beaches in Cascais and Estoril during peak summer can be a headache. If you do drive, look for the designated underground or paid car parks slightly back from the seafront.
Mapping the golf courses to the coast
The best part of a Lisbon holiday is that you don’t have to choose between a coastal getaway and a golf resort. The beaches map beautifully to the finest courses in the region.
The Estoril & Cascais Hub
If you are relaxing on Praia do Tamariz or Praia da Conceição, you are within easy reach of world-class golf courses:
- Estoril Golf Course is just a short drive inland from Tamariz beach. It’s a mature, historic track that offers a classic, sheltered test. So you can play an early round in the morning, stop for lunch then head to the beach to cool off.
- The spectacular Oitavos Dunes and its neighbour, Quinta da Marinha Golf Course, sit on the western edge of Cascais. You can finish a round on the rugged, pine-fringed fairways of Oitavos and dip your toes in the sea ten minutes later.
- Even the iconic Penha Longa Resort in the Sintra hills is only a 15-minute drive from Cascais, meaning you can easily swap the dramatic mountain microclimate for the sea air in the same afternoon.
Other options worth the drive
If you fancy exploring further, the Silver Coast region, about an hour north of Lisbon, offers a dramatic combination of rugged cliffs and world-class golf.
Here, the spectacular layouts of West Cliffs, Praia D’El Rey, and the Seve Ballesteros-designed Royal Obidos sit directly alongside sweeping Atlantic beaches.
Alternatively, cross the iconic 25 de Abril bridge to the south and you will reach another excellent area for combining golf and the coast. Quinta do Peru Golf Course and the famous PGA Aroeira layouts are surrounded by dense pine forests but sit just minutes away from the massive sandy beaches of the Costa da Caparica.

Where to stay for a beach and golf break
When deciding where to base your group, you have two distinct options: stay in central Lisbon and commute out, or stay at a dedicated resort where the beach and the first tee are right on your doorstep. For a true golf and relaxation break, we highly recommend staying just outside the bustling city centre.
Here are the top spots we include in our custom packages:
- Hotel Palácio Estoril: This place is legendary. It offers 5-star luxury, a world-class spa for non-golfers, and sits right next to Praia do Tamariz. Plus, residents enjoy special privileges at Estoril Golf. When we’ve stayed here, we’ve been blown away by the glamorous decor and the value offered by its stay-and-golf packages.
- Onyria Quinta da Marinha Boutique Hotel: This hotel puts you right in the heart of Cascais luxury. It offers seamless access to Quinta da Marinha course and nearby beaches. We’ve also stayed in their recently refurbished boutique sister hotel, Kimpton Quinta da Marinha Cascais, and love this stylish little pocket of Cascais.
- Penha Longa Resort: Tucked away in Sintra, this resort offers a peaceful mountain sanctuary, but it is close enough that you can easily head down the hill to the beach whenever you fancy. When we stayed here, we were wowed by the Michelin-starred restaurants on site.
- Praia D’El Rey Resort / Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort: Heading north, these resorts are ideal if you want to wake up, look out at the Atlantic waves, and walk straight onto the fairways. We’ve stayed in the five-star Marriott hotel at Praia D’El Rey, which is exceptional, but for larger groups or those on a budget, check out the Village by the Ocean Apartments.
