You can dip in for a couple of days as part of a wider Portugal trip, stay longer and build a Lisbon golf holiday, or simply pop across for a weekend break. The choice is yours.

How many days should you book in Lisbon?

For most travellers, three to four days tends to strike a good balance. It gives you time to explore the main districts, and see a few of the well-known sights. If you want to squeeze in a round, you should still have time for to try one of the amazing golf courses without everything feeling too tight.

If golf is a big part of your holiday planning, stretching to five days or more is advised. Courses around Lisbon are spread out along the coast and slightly inland, so while none are especially difficult to reach, you will appreciate having a bit more breathing room between tee times and city plans.

Two days can work, but it usually feels like a stop within a larger Portugal golf holiday rather than the main event. A week, on the other hand, allows you to combine the city with some of the most loved courses in the region, and maybe a day trip or two that takes you beyond Lisbon itself.

What to see in Lisbon in two days

Two days in Lisbon is enough to get a feel for the place, even if it’s not in-depth. It works best if you treat it as a highlight reel.

  • Day 1: Start in Baixa, which is flat by Lisbon standards and easy to walk. From there, head towards Alfama for the older streets and viewpoints, then up to São Jorge Castle for a wider view across the city.
  • Day 2: On the second day, head west to Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. They sit close together, so you can cover both without too much planning. Add in a walk along the river and a stop for the iconic Portuguese pastel de nata, and there you have a full but manageable day.

If you are trying to include golf, splitting the time into one day on the course and one day in the city is probably the best approach.

What to do in Lisbon for three days

With three days in Lisbon, the pace changes slightly. You are no longer trying to squeeze everything into two tight blocks, so you can be a bit more selective.

  • Day 1: Day one can still be dedicated to the central sights, but you might branch out into areas like LX Factory, which has a different feel from the historic districts.
  • Day 2: Day two can be built around golf. Courses such as Quinta da Marinha Golf Course or Oitavos Dunes Golf Course are within reach of the city and offer a coastal setting that feels quite removed from the centre.
  • Day 3: Use the extra day to go beyond Lisbon itself. A trip to Sintra works well here, as you are not trying to squeeze it into an already full schedule. You can take your time visiting places like Pena Palace or simply walking through the town, then return to Lisbon in the evening without feeling rushed.

Four days gives you room to slow things down, which is often when Lisbon starts to feel more interesting.

You can still cover the main sights, but there is time to go further afield. A full day in Sintra, including places like Pena Palace, is more comfortable when it’s not squeezed into a half-day trip.

Alternatively, you could spend time along the coast in Cascais or even head slightly further to quieter beaches.

For golfers, this is where the trip starts to open up. Two rounds become realistic without feeling rushed, and you can choose courses that are a little further out. Penha Longa Resort, for example, combines golf with a setting that feels quite different from the coastal courses.

There is also space for the less obvious parts of Lisbon, smaller viewpoints, neighbourhood cafés, or simply time to wander without a fixed plan. It does not sound like much, but it changes the tone of the trip quite a bit.

Whether you want to save your legs for the back nine or you’re looking for the most cost-effective way to transport a group of eight around, here’s our insider guide to getting around for your next Portugal golf holiday.

  • How far is Vilamoura from Faro airport? Vilamoura is around 24 km / 15 miles from Faro Airport, which is the closest airport, with a transfer time of around 30 minutes (depending on your chosen option)
  • How far is Vilamoura from Albufeira? Albufeira is quite near to Vilamoura at just 18km / 11 miles away. The local buses (choose the number 9 or 101 Express) take between 30 and 40 minutes.
  • How far is Vilamoura from Quinta de Lago? Quinta do Lago is around 12km / 9 miles away, though public transport between the two is limited.
  • Is there Uber in Vilamoura? Taxis and Ubers are available and frequent, though can be costly with local trips around €18 and airport transfers starting from €30.
  • Is Vilamoura hilly? Vilamoura doesn’t have many hills in the centre, so the flat surface means walking and cycling around the centre is manageable.
  • Is Vilamoura cycle-friendly? There are also cycling paths within Vilamoura, making it quite cycling-friendly.
  • Is there a train station in Vilamoura? No, there’s no mainline train station. Boliqueime has a station with routes to Lagos and Faro, while Loulé has trains to Lisbon and Albufeira as well.

These are the most popular options for getting between hotels, golf courses and airports in Vilamoura.

1. The Famous Free Golf Shuttle Bus

One of the biggest perks of staying in Vilamoura is the complimentary shuttle service provided by the Details Sports & Hospitality Group (formerly Dom Pedro).

If you are playing any of the “Big Five” courses (The Old Course, The Els Club, Millennium, Laguna, or Pinhal) and staying at a participating hotel – such as the Hyatt Regency Vilamoura Algarve, or Dom Pedro Portobelo – you can take advantage of the free shuttle bus.

For larger groups, or those playing courses slightly further afield like Vale Do Lobo’s Royal Course or Quinta do Lago’s South Course, private transfers are often the best route.

While the free shuttles are great, they run on a fixed schedule. If you want to stay for an extra Sagres on the clubhouse terrace without worrying about missing the last bus, a pre-booked private transfer is the answer.

3. Uber, Bolt, and Local Taxis

Ride-sharing apps are ideal for your Algarve golf trip. Uber and Bolt are both widely available in Vilamoura and are remarkably cheap compared to UK prices.

  • The Pro: You can track the car in real-time, and you don’t need to worry about explaining your destination in Portuguese.
  • The Con: During the peak summer months or late at night around the Marina, “surge pricing” can kick in, and wait times can increase.
  • Taxis: There are dedicated taxi ranks at the Marina and outside major hotels. They are metered and reliable, but ensure they have enough boot space if you have four sets of clubs!

4. The Vilamoura Tourist Train

If you are staying in the “Old Village” area, or slightly back from the front, the Tourist Train (Comboio Turístico) is a fun and surprisingly practical way to reach the Marina or Falesia Beach.

It’s not a “golf” transport method per se (don’t try to lug your tour bag onto it!), but for an evening out or a recovery day trip to the beach, it’s a great way to see the resort. It runs in a loop and usually costs a few Euros for a day pass.

5. Walking & Cycling

Vilamoura is famously flat, making it one of the most walkable resorts in the Algarve.

  • Walking: If you stay at the Vila Galé Ampalius or Vila Galé Marina, you are steps away from hundreds of restaurants.
  • Cycling: Vilamoura has an excellent network of cycle paths and a public bike-sharing scheme called “Vilamoura Public Bikes”. You’ll see the silver bikes at stations all over the resort. It’s a great way to explore the leafy avenues between the Pinhal and Old Course areas.

Honestly, you usually don’t need to hire a car. Unless you plan on driving 45 minutes west to play courses like Palmares or Penina, the cost of car hire, insurance, and the hassle of finding parking at the Marina often outweighs the benefits.

Most golfers find that a combination of the free shuttles and the occasional Uber is much more relaxed.

What is the best time for a group trip?

May and September are regarded as peak golf season in the Algarve, offering superb weather. However, for similar conditions with slightly lower green fees, consider travelling in June or October.

How far in advance should I book for a group of 12+?

For groups of 12+ – especially if you’re targeting the popular Vilamoura courses – we recommend booking at least nine months ahead (ideally 12). Securing three or more back-to-back tee times in the mid-morning takes early planning, and regular Algarve travellers will tell you the same.

Can we book buggies in advance?

Yes, you can and we would recommend you do so as not all courses have a fleet big enough for every golfer. However, it’s worth noting that not all courses allow this – the Pestana golf courses for instance will not allow any pre-reserving or pre-paying of a buggy unless there is a medical condition and doctors note.

Can we handle separate payments?

We reached out to some key players in golf holidays and general travel to find out what to expect in 2026. Here’s what they said:

Trend 1: Solo travel is on the rise

A number of people noticed the rise in solo travel.

Corrie Renton, Co-director of Glencor Golf Holidays said: “UK golfers are increasingly embracing solo travel, combining their love of the game with the freedom to explore new destinations at their own pace.

“Golf holidays abroad offer the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and opportunity to meet fellow players from around the world.”

Christina Gales, Certified Pro Travel Advisor and Founder of Christina Gales Travel said: “For 2026, I predict we’ll see a significant rise in solo golf trips, especially among professionals looking for a mix of sport and personal reset time.

“More golfers will be booking trips that combine rounds at European courses with wellness activities like spa treatments or coastal walks, rather than purely golf-focused itineraries.”

Piotr Zabula, CEO of Feedink.com dug into the data and found the same: “Based on trends we observed in 2025, solo golf travel will continue to grow significantly in 2026.

“More golfers are seeking the freedom to plan their own itineraries, play at their own pace, and choose courses without needing to coordinate with others. This shift reflects a broader desire for personalised travel experiences that prioritise individual preferences and flexibility over group compromises.”

Trend 2: Micro-trips & closer-to-home golf

While many people love a long-haul golf break, we’re also seeing people wanting short and sweet trips closer to home.

Glen Renton, Co-director of Glencor Golf Holidays said: “We’re seeing a growing trend among UK golfers for micro-trips and shorter golf breaks closer to home.

“Busy schedules and a desire for quick escapes are driving more players to explore local courses, making the most of a long weekend or even a single day away.”

Cam Storey, Owner of Brisbane 360, a tour operator in Australia, added: “Regional golf destinations within 2-3 hours of major cities will boom over international travel. I’ve seen this with our own tours – people want the “away” feeling without the airport hassle.”

Rengie Wisper, Marketing Manager, Palmako backs this up: “Golfers will abandon famous bucket-list destinations in 2026 to focus on “micro-trips” to lesser-known cities.”

At Glencor Golf Holidays, we’re big fans of group travel.  But we expect to see the standard ‘lads abroad’ groups evolve into something more multi-generational with curated social events for solos.

Glen Renton, Co-director of Glencor Golf Holidays said: “Golf travel from the UK is shifting towards thoughtful, multi-generational breaks—where memorable moments off the course are just as important as the game itself.”

Cam Storey added: “Expect golf getaways to shift from “mates’ trips” to multi-generational family experiences.

“More mixed age groups – grandparents, parents, and adult kids – are looking for shared experiences rather than age-segregated trips. Seniors are now fitter and more adventurous than ever – and they want activities their families can join.

“Golf is perfect for this because different skill levels can play together, and non-golfers can enjoy the destination.”

Shishir Dubey, Founder of Jungle Revives, a tour operator, added: “Solo travel isn’t just for backpackers anymore. We will see a rise in “single golfer” hosted weeks where solo travellers book spots in a curated group.

“This demographic – often aged 40-60, divorced or with non-playing partners – wants the camaraderie of a club competition without the hassle of organising seven friends.”

Alex Veka, Founder, Vibe Adventures said: “I predict a rise of group trips where you plan the basics but also have a spontaneous “wild card window” of a couple of hours where nothing is planned and you’re allowed to just go off and discover your surroundings.

 

“This transforms regular trips into genuine adventures without ruining the schedule or blowing the budget. Test one wild card window on day two, limit spending to roughly 10 percent of your daily budget, and let the locals lead the fun.”

Trend 4: AI + human expertise

While AI is invading every corner of our lives, there’s something about travel planning that still needs a human touch.

Corrie Renton, Co-director of Glencor Golf Holidays said: “Many UK golfers are now using AI to help shape and refine their golf holiday itineraries, giving tour operators like ourselves a clear idea of their preferences.

“Yet working with an experienced operator remains invaluable – first-hand knowledge of courses, accommodations, and local insights ensures the trip is not just well planned, but genuinely unforgettable.”

Christina Gales agrees: “The planning approach will likely split into two camps: younger golfers using AI tools for quick recommendations, while more experienced travellers will return to working with specialists who understand their specific needs and can curate meaningful experiences.

“This shift reflects a broader trend where people want their golf trips to serve a deeper purpose beyond just the game itself.”

Cam Storey added: “For planning, I’m betting people will use AI to research but book through actual humans for anything beyond basic transport.

“During COVID, I kept every single booking alive through personal phone calls and relationship management – something no algorithm could replicate.

“When things get complicated (mixed abilities, special requirements, multi-day itineraries), people want to talk to someone who knows the local operators and can troubleshoot on the fly.”

Trend 5: Emerging & experiential destinations

Beach holidays aren’t necessarily a thing of the past, but more people are now looking for less travelled destinations and holidays that mix relaxation with unique experiences.

Chris Ryan, PGA Professional said: “Personally, if I were recommending a destination for a golf trip in 2026 I’d be going with Turkey – specifically the Belek area.

“The courses are incredible, the hotels are big and luxurious, and the service is fantastic too. Plus, everything is very close, so you get a wide range of courses and hotels to choose from.

“The all-inclusive hotels make budgeting a little easier and the weather is also generally better in the winter months.”

Corrie Renton, Co-director of Glencor Golf Holidays agrees: “UK golfers are increasingly drawn to emerging destinations like Lisbon, Marrakech, and Madeira, seeking courses and experiences off the usual tourist trail of the Algarve and Costa Del Sol.

“These locations offer the thrill of discovery, combining world-class golf with unique culture, cuisine, and scenery that make each trip truly memorable.”

Shishir Dubey added: “In 2026, golfers will look beyond traditional fairways to destinations combining “bucket list” adventure with world-class golf.

“With Tangier and Marrakech offering a fusion of ancient culture and modern luxury, Morocco fits the trend of experiential golf.

“It appeals to travellers who want a morning round followed by an afternoon in a souk, offering a sensory richness that European resorts sometimes lack.”

At the other end of the experiential scale is a move to ‘quiet luxury’.

Arsen Misakyan, CEO and Founder, LAXcar said: “The travel industry will be oriented towards ‘quiet luxury’ in golfing travel in 2026 due to the availability of world-class golf courses with minimal crowds.

“More people will travel to destinations such as Madeira for their unique and creative golf courses and wonderful scenery.

“Overall, the more personalised and experience-driven travel will be in higher demand. There will be a desire for travel to less populated courses, along with nearby boutique hotels, and easy-to-reach transportation.

“There is a big desire for adventure and travel at these golfing destinations, and with all of the travellers I manage, I see a need for quick and easy travel.”

Aashish Sharma BEng, Strategy Consultant at Prepaid Travel Cards added: “Golfers will look for newer, less familiar locations that provide value and less crowded fairways.

Old Course Vilamoura

San Lorenzo, Algarve
San Lorenzo has been a well-respected golf course in the Algarve since it first opened in 1988. Since its opening in 2025, the The Els Club Vilamoura has transformed into a private members club however there are a small number of daily tee-time available for holiday golfers if they are residents of Victoria Golf Resort & Spa.

  • Explore The Stunning Beaches: The Algarve boasts a number of beautiful golden sand beaches, many of which have dramatic cliff tops overhead.   • Go Hiking or Cycling: If you’ve got energy to burn despite all the golf, hire a bike or just hike many of the trails and nature reserves. Top picks include Rota Vicentina which is a network of walking routes that span hundreds of kilometres. Another option is the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa which is a protected area consisting of lagoons, islands, marshland and sandy beaches that stretch 60km across the Algarve coast – remember to take your camera as there is plenty of wildlife to spot!

This amazing building blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Development dates back to 1385 when the foundations started, with the first stone laid in 1388.
  • Check out the Salzillo Museum, home to the Barqoue sculptures of 18th century Murcian artist Francisco Salzollo. This museum is located in the Church of Our Father Jesus (Iglesia de Nuestro Padre Jesús) in Murcia city.
  • Beyond Salzillo Museum and Cathedral de Murcia, there is plenty to see and do in the Old Town of Murcia.
