Golf Platja de Pals, Girona

Having opened in 1966 Golf Platja de Pals is the oldest golf course in the Costa Brava region, and it is currently ranked in the top 100 courses in Europe. Traditional in design (it’s another Hawtree classic) this par 73 course is a real treat and very British in design. The landscape is extraordinary as its only 500 metres from the sea but bears no resemblance to a links-type course despite the presence of sand dunes. With flat fairways winding through masses of umbrella pine trees, it is easy to see why it has hosted the Spanish Open and the PGA Qualifying School on several occasions.

The opening hole sets the tone for the rest of the round. Standing on the tee, the fairway is lined by large umbrella pines that give definition to the hole. The hole is not long and, assuming you hit the fairway, it’s a relatively easy shot to the green. The next two holes are similar again – if you find the fairway they do not represent too much of a challenge. After that, however, things change and although you are still driving through an alley of pine trees the second shots become more challenging. Unusually there are 6 dog legged holes and with five par fives these balance the shortish opening holes to bring the yardage up to around 6800 yards. There are three terrific finishing holes that make a visit here a memorable experience. If you can avoid the trees that are strategically placed, the bunkers guarding the greens and fairway bunkers that stop you cutting the corners on the dog legs, you can make a good score but it’s a really interesting challenge for golfers of all abilities.

There are some holes at Golf Platja De Pals where it is probably advisable to play for position and not just bang away with the driver. Several of the greens are raised to test the short game and although they appear quite flat once you are on them they have subtle contours that demand attention.
