About Dom Pedro Golf Old Course, Vilamoura
The Dom Pedro Old Course is one of Vilamoura’s oldest golf courses and has stood the test of time very well. It now has a par of 73 and from the championship tees it stretches to 6800 yards. Originally designed by Frank Pennink it has been constantly updated to keep pace with the changes in modern equipment and now is just as much of a challenge as it was when it first opened in 1969 thanks to some excellent remodelling by Martin Hawtree.
As you would expect it’s a very traditional design with immaculately cut fairways winding through ancient trees and vegetation. Accuracy is more important than length off the tee here and to get the best angle into the smallish greens you need to find the correct side of the fairway to give you the best chance of knocking it close.
Providing you hit the fairway the first 3 holes are pretty straightforward and its when you come to the short par three fourth with a lake in front of the green that you get a sense of what to come.180 yards from the back tees if you carry the water there is then a bunker immediately in front of the green and there are 3 other bunkers on the left hand side of the green. The par 5 twelfth is a good test. A dog leg right which will tempt you to go over the pine trees to cut the corner and leave an easier second shot. The hole climbs steadily towards the green and the second shot is quite tight as you have to thread it through the trees and avoid a bunker short of the green. You are always happy with a par here.
The eighteenth is a good finishing hole requiring an accurate drive onto a narrow fairway between some bunkers and the approach has to miss two bunkers guarding the green.
If you are looking to play an extremely good traditional style golf course then don’t miss the chance to play the Old Course.
