We have recently visited several of the Q Hotels groups golf hotels and courses and it is no surprise to see that they were awarded the AA’s Hotel chain of the year two years in a row. They have embarked on an extensive refurbishment programme at many of their properties to maintain their pre-eminent position as one of the country’s leading golf / hotel operators.
This development was certainly evident at Belton Woods near to Grantham where they have spent £350,000 refurbishing the spa and leisure facilities. As you would expect there are treatment rooms offering all kinds of services to make your stay there memorable. There is a fully equipped fitness studio and a relaxation lounge to recover from your efforts as well as a swimming pool. Outside there are two excellent tennis courts as well as an adventure sports centre in the grounds.
The hotel is a comfortable 4 star property with spacious and luxurious bedrooms with free WiFi throughout the Hotel. There are two restaurants offering cuisine to suit all tastes.
With 45 holes of golf available on site the golfer won’t be bored during a stay here. The Lakes course is the tougher test with as its name implies several water features to catch the unwary. The fairways are reasonably generous but there are some challenging shots to the greens and they are extremely good and depending on their speed can be tricky. There is also one of the country’s longest holes to negotiate as the par 5 ninth hole is over 600 yards . The Woodside course although a little easier is still a good challenge and is a little more undulating than the Lakes course. Its only 200 yards shorter than the Lakes Course so it’s well up to championship standard and shouldn’t be seen as a lightweight. There are excellent practice facilities including a covered driving range and a 9 hole short course.
We also visited Oulton Hall close to Leeds. The 152 bedroom property is an 18th century former family mansion. It’s much changed since those days and now offers comfortable and well equipped rooms offering all the facilities you would expect from a modern 4 star hotel. There is an extremely well equipped spa and gym with the most modern of equipment.
Outside there are superb landscaped gardens and 27 very good golf holes designed by renowned golf architect Dave Thomas. There is one of the best golf academies in Yorkshire with a floodlit driving range and an excellent club fitting centre.
Whichever of the 10 Q Hotels that has a golf course that you choose to stay at you won’t be disappointed by the quality of the accommodation or the golf courses. Spread throughout the country there will be a location not too far away from you and they are all well worth a visit.
